Cooling Curtains

Cooling Curtains

Cooler door strip curtains, also known as strip doors or PVC strip curtains, are an essential component for optimizing temperature control and energy efficiency in various settings, particularly in commercial and industrial environments such as walk-in coolers, freezers, warehouses, and food processing facilities. Here's a breakdown of key aspects:

1. Function and benefits

  • Temperature control: Strip curtains are specifically designed to minimize the loss of cold air when cooler doors are open, helping to maintain desired temperature levels inside the cooler or freezer.
  • Energy efficiency: By preventing air loss, strip curtains reduce the workload on cooling systems, leading to lower energy consumption and significant cost savings.
  • Improved workflow: They allow for easy and hands-free passage for personnel, equipment, and goods, without the need to constantly open and close heavy doors, optimizing workflow and minimizing energy consumption.
  • Reduced frost and moisture buildup: By limiting the entry of warm, humid air, strip curtains help prevent frost and moisture accumulation on cooling coils and inside the refrigerated space.
  • Enhanced hygiene and separation: They create a barrier against dust, smoke, fumes, and flying insects, promoting a cleaner and more hygienic environment, according to Steel Guard Safety Corp.
  • Compliance: In some cases, such as new walk-in coolers and freezers, federal regulations like the Energy and Security Act of 2007, mandate the use of strip curtains or self-closing hinges. Additionally, some strip curtains meet USDA, FDA, and CFIA standards for incidental contact with food products.

2. Materials and construction

  • PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride): The most common material used for strip curtains due to its durability, flexibility, clarity, and resistance to cold temperatures.
  • Smooth vs. Ribbed: Strips can be smooth or ribbed. Ribbed strips can be more resistant to scratching and offer better visibility.
  • Low-temperature options: For deep freeze applications, special low-temperature PVC strips are available that remain flexible even in extreme cold.
  • Hardware: Strip curtain kits typically include mounting brackets made from materials like galvanized steel, which can be installed on walls, eaves, or suspended.

3. Installation

  • Measuring and trimming: Measure the door opening and trim the PVC strips to the correct length, ensuring they hang just above the floor.
  • Mounting the hardware: Secure the mounting bracket above the door opening, ensuring it is level and properly attached.
  • Hanging the strips: Attach the PVC strips to the mounting hardware, ensuring proper overlap to create a seal and maximize effectiveness.
